The history of Tomsk Cancer Research Institute dates back to June 29, 1979 when Siberian branch of the All-Union Cancer Research Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences was set up. Tomsk Scientific Center was founded in 1986 and Siberian branch of the All-Union Cancer Research Institute was reorganized into an independent institute. Professor B.N. Zyryanov was appointed as Director of the Institute.
Since April, 2002 Professor Evgeny L. Choynzonov, MD, PhD, DSc, Associate Member of RAMS has been Director of the Cancer Research Institute.
The Cancer Research Institute in Tomsk is the only one in Russian Siberia and Far East. There are about 500 employees including 96 research fellows with scientific degree and 48 physicians.
The Cancer Research Institute in Tomsk is engaged in research and clinical activity in the field of cancer diagnosis, treatment and prevention. The Institute has been developing novel high technology approaches to the combined modality treatment for cancer patients, which are approved in clinic and introduced in public health institutions. The Institute has expensive equipment which meets the requirements of the highest world standards for research and patient care institutions. For experimental cancer researches there are laboratories of epidemiology, virology, immunology and biochemistry of tumors. The Clinic of Cancer Research Institute provides the treatment for patients living in Siberia and the Russian Far East. It has an in-patient hospital department with 220 inpatient beds and outpatient department with the capacity of 70 visits per shift. The main function of the clinic-based diagnostics center is rendering consultation and diagnostics assistance to patients with pre-cancer and cancer.
The in-patient department has 5 clinic subdivisions including tumor chemotherapy, head and neck tumors, thoracoabdominal oncology, oncogynecology and general oncology, where methods of organ-saving and function-sparing surgeries developed in the Institute are applied. Radiation therapy is provided in the clinic radiology department that has comprehensive facilities for gamma therapy with the use of ROCUS-M unit and linear electron accelerator, gamma-therapt with the use of 6-10 MeV fast electrons and neutron therapy with the use of a U-120 cyclotron. A special operating room has a small-size 6 MeV betatron for intraoperative radiation therapy. Fluorescent diagnostics and photodynamic tumor therapy are performed in the Endoscopy Department. About 2,500 patients undergo inpatient treatment per year. There is a wide range of after-treatment rehabilitation methods.
The Diagnostic Department comprises Imaging Department (X-ray, ultrasound, CT, MRI), Radioisotopic Diagnosis Department, Pathology and Cytology Department including Immunohistochemical Laboratory, Clinical -Diagnostic Laboratory and Clinical Immunology Group.
The main research activities of the Institute are:
- Conducting fundamental research to study mechanisms of malignant neoplasm development and pathogenesis on the territory of Russian Siberia and Far East, revealing endogenous and exogenous etiological factors and their complexes to improve organization of oncology-oriented aid to the population of the region
- Investigating life-support systems of organism and molecular-genetic tumor characteristics, reflecting carcinogenesis and tumor progress mechanisms, to form high risk oncology groups, provide early detection and disease prognosis in order to choose adequate treatment policy
- Developing new efficient programs of combination therapy for cancer patients on the basis of high-technology approaches, improving adjuvant therapy regimen, pathogenetically-motivated application of new chemotherapy agents and cytostatic therapy modifiers, improving methods of reconstructive-plastic and organ-preserving surgery and approaches to rehabilitation measures.
The Cancer Research Institute provides its facilities for medical students and physicians-in-training. The Oncology Chair of the Siberian State Medical University is located at the Clinic of the Institute. The Tomsk Cancer Research Institute contributes greatly to the training in oncology for the personnel working in oncological organizations of Siberia and the Russian Far East. The Institute's curriculum includes postgraduate training in oncology and a Dissertation Board for obtaining Doctor of Science and MD PhD degrees. The Institute is a founder of "Siberian oncology journal".
In 1994 the Institute joined the Organization of European Cancer Institutes (OECI). It cooperates with various medical and technical organizations and actively participates in cooperated Russian and International researches on the efficacy of anti-tumor drugs and in programs of joined researches with other Institutes of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. The Institute continuously organizes various scientific conferences, seminars and meetings.
